HIV/AIDS Project in Ethiopia

Project target £80   0%

By raising £80 you could help us train 2 peer educators - key, particularly among young people, to disseminating correct information about the transmission of HIV, so crucial to prevention, and to countering the stigma and discrimination associated to living with the virus.

Most young people are more responsive to changing their behaviour if it is presented to them by their peers which can ease open discussion on uncomfortable or taboo subjects. Peer education, conducted by well trained young people, equipped with the right tools and correct information, has a positive impact on efforts to educate others about the risks and dangers of HIV and AIDS.

Young people will be encouraged to adopt safer lifestyles, giving them life skills including communication, decision-making and assertiveness, and in doing so reduce the incidence of HIV and urge a fuller understanding of the facts and the truth in order to counter stigma and discrimination. These young people taking part in the program will then be able to pass on the information they have learned to countless friends and families, thus expanding the reach of the project.

In Ethiopia alone, approximately 1.3 million people are living with HIV and 128,900 new infections reported in 2005. It is a considerable threat to the country’s future. Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world and faces a huge task providing treatment, care and support to affected households.
