British Red Cros: September 2009

When disasters strike, like this week's devastating floods in the Philippines , you'll usually turn on the news and see boxes of Red Cross aid being distributed to the people who have lost everything. What you don't often see is the work we do before disasters happen to prepare vulnerable communities .

We work with people like Devi in Nepal, whose home was constantly under threat from landslides. We also have programmes in Bangladesh, one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, to make sure people know how to survive cyclones and floods.

Here in the UK, we work alongside the emergency services and train volunteers to give their neighbours immediate help during floods, house fires and evacuations. You can listen to a podcast featuring two of our incredible volunteers, Clive and Janice.

The International Day for Disaster Reduction is on 14 October. Find out how we help ensure we're ready to
respond rapidly to emergencies .

Best wishes

Disaster Preparedness Manager
