Feet For Feet: May 2009

Life Straw'Feet for Feet' is an idea devised and developed by two brothers, Simon and Anthony Devine who were both born in Holbrook, Derbyshire the most southerly village of the Pennine chain. Combining their love of walking and the great outdoors and a wish to help underprivileged children in rural Tanzania they plan to walk the Pennine Way. This is a total distance of 268 miles which they plan to complete in twelve days. They will each carry a school chair with them.

The idea behind this and the walk is to highlight the long distances these children have to travel to get to school and then have to sit on makeshift furniture or even on the floor. In addition to the enormity of this challenge, Simon & Anthony will only drink water from natural sources found along the way using the “Life straw”, a filtration kit used in humanitarian crisis' where water quality is poor or not fit for consumption.

If you wish to provide children and adults with a Life Straw logon to www.schoolaidnetwork.co.uk and go to Mini Enterprises where you can pledge money towards providing Life Straws.

The walk will begin at Edale in Derbyshire and finish in Kirk Yethom in the Scottish borders. Starting 31st July, finishing 11th August.

Sponsorship money raised will go to 'Education for all' a charity which sources high quality redundant school furniture, which would normally end up in a landfill site, who will ship school furniture and “life straws” into rural Tanzanian schools.

The launch of this event is taking place at the despatch warehouse of Education for All, where a container of school resources will be sent to Tanzania, supported by the Tanzanian High Commission, to raise awareness here, and in Tanzania, of this event and Education for All's aims. The container will hold over 500 pupils worth of desks and chairs and will be kindly loaded by staff from Thorpe Kilworth Limited.
