Girls Powerless - A new Report By Plan: May 2007

undefined undefinedWhy, in an era that saw the term ‘girl power’ coined, are millions of girls being condemned to a life of inequality and poverty?

This is a question posed in a new report to be launched as part of "Because I am a Girl", a major global campaign which aims to transform the lives of girls growing up in the world’s poorest communities.  The report will be launched by Marie Staunton, Chief Executive of Plan UK at:

Mortons

28 Berkley Square

London

                                                                           UK

The campaign starts with the publication of the most comprehensive report ever published on the disturbing situation, pulling together global statistics highlighting the extent of female foeticide, early marriage, abuse and violence and the lack of education given to girls in the world's poorer countries.

‘Because I am a Girl: The State of the World’s Girls’ is the first in a series of nine, global reports on girls by Plan International, one of the world’s largest children’s development agencies.

The study has been backed by Graça Machel, a leading campaigner for children’s rights and member of the Africa Progress Panel led by former UN secretary general Kofi Annan. Plan will use the report launch to kick-start the start of an eight year drive to fight discrimination against girls.

As well as a question and answer session, there will be opportunities for one-on-one interviews with Plan UK’s Chief Executive Marie Staunton, Lesley Bulmen-Lever, Chief Executive of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and teenage child rights campaigners from the UK and Sierra Leone.
