Spilsby Primary: April 2007
A class of enthusiastic Year Two pupils decided their teacher, Miss Willoughby, should wear a sari. They then waited for their Head Teacher, Mrs. Powell, to visit the classroom. Three of the pupils were also dressed in saris.
Spilsby Primary School, Lincolnshire was the first school in the country to be involved in a mini-enterprise project run by School Aid Network in conjunction with ABS UK.
The pupils were given an introduction to the concept of a charity and then introduced to the problems of Bangladesh. The pupils were split into four groups and each group decided upon one project they would like to support. The projects all involved interest free loans of between £30 and £40 to families who hope to start their own business. The business might involved purchasing a cow, repairing or owning a rickshaw or the man who dreams of opening a tea shop. By enabling the families in Bangladesh to run their own businesses they can provide better education, health, etc. for all the family members.
The pupils at Spilsby will be able to ask questions of the families they support and follow the families progress via the internet.
Spilsby School decided they would like to fund a child's education. ABS UK have agreed to find a suitable child. The Year Two class will then lead the school in a fund raising project based around areas of the curriculum. Once they have paid the education fees for their selected child the class will then decide which of the four mini-enterprises they will support with the remaining donations.100% of the money they raise will go to the chosen projects.
My lasting memory of the experience is a group of Year Two pupils deciding which was more important to supply tea and biscuits or to make clothes.
